Work started in late September to develop the new Hockey facility at Droitwich Road, Worcester and is in partnership with RGS Worcester, Worcester Hockey Club and Worcester City Council. The project involves building a facility to include two international standard Hockey pitches, two grass Football pitches, changing facilities and onsite parking.
The initial work involved clearing the site and establishing the ground levels with the addition of drainage and creating a platform for the Hockey pitches. Stone, sand and tarmac will be laid on top of the platform before the artificial turf goes down and at this stage, the tolerance will be only +/-5mm! In total, 6000 tonnes of stone will be used.
When completed, each Hockey pitch will be approximately 91.5m x 55 m and the levels of the platform are +/- 20mm across the whole area. The pitches are being laid to International Standards for Hockey Competitions and have been shortlisted for use as a Training Camp for countries participating in the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
In addition, there will be two Football pitches; one of which will be full size and the other a junior pitch for Years Seven and Eight.
The Project is benefiting from a Grant from the Tree Council, funded by Network Rail, to plant over 100 trees as part of the development. The facility is planned to be ready for use by September 2021 and we will keep you updated with the progress for this exciting facility for Worcester, which will provide the opportunity for hundreds of boys and girls from local schools to enjoy.
